Buy Well Once

Tools and yard gear worth keeping for decades

A good tool should outlast the project you bought it for. This hub collects our buy-once guides to cordless power tools, a table saw, multitools, precision hand tools and yard equipment. Each is built from the Amazon US listing, maker manuals and warranty pages, never from invented torque tests or "best drill" rankings.

How to choose tools that last

Pick a battery platform, not just a drill. The DEWALT DCD771C2 drill kit, the DCK277D2 drill and impact driver combo and the wider DEWALT 20V MAX line share batteries, so the second tool costs less and your batteries don't strand you. Before you commit to any platform, check that the tools you'll want next run on the same packs.

Look for published manuals and parts diagrams. For a tool you plan to keep, such as the DEWALT DWE7491RS 10-inch table saw with rolling stand, a downloadable manual and parts breakdown means fences, blades and switches can be replaced instead of the whole saw.

Read warranty terms on both the listing and the maker's site. They don't always say the same thing. For the Leatherman Wave Plus, Amazon's warranty field says "Lifetime Leatherman Warranty," while Leatherman's own site publishes a 25-year limited warranty with an online claim form. The Sun Joe SPX3000 electric pressure washer lists a 2-year warranty.

Buy small tools once, too. A sorted precision driver set like the JOREST 40-piece kit covers electronics, eyeglasses and appliance screws that a full-size driver can't reach.

Our buy-it-for-life tools roundup compares five of these picks in one table, and the cost-per-use roundup shows how to work out what a tool costs per job.

FAQ

Why does the battery platform matter when buying a drill?

Tools on the same platform, such as DEWALT 20V MAX, share batteries and chargers. Your second tool can be bought bare, and a dead battery doesn't take a tool out of service.

What warranty does the Leatherman Wave Plus have?

Amazon's warranty field says "Lifetime Leatherman Warranty," and Leatherman's own site publishes a 25-year limited warranty with an online claim form. Check the maker's terms before relying on either.

Do you run your own tool tests?

No. The guides use the Amazon US listing, maker manuals and warranty pages and cited outside sources. We don't publish invented torque, runtime or durability figures.
