BowFlex Results Series 552 SelectTech Dumbbells: A Buy-Once Guide
Is the BowFlex Results Series 552 safe to buy after the 2025 SelectTech 552 recall? The recall announced with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on June 5, 2025 covered the original BowFlex 552 and 1090 dumbbells, because their weight plates could dislodge from the handle. The Results Series 552 (US ASIN B0FRNG2N5H, model BFW0025-OS) is the redesigned model BowFlex now offers as a recall replacement, with metal plates and a reworked locking system per the listing and maker. That is the maker's claim; we did not drop-test or lift-test anything. When we checked Amazon US on 2026-10-18, the pair was In Stock at $328.98 (list price shown $399.99), shipped and sold by Amazon.com. Everything below comes from that listing, BowFlex's own pages, the CPSC notice and named third-party guides.

How we judged it
For adjustable dumbbells, "buy once" means a weight range you won't outgrow soon, a locking design with a clean safety record (or a clear fix), a written warranty, parts or support you can actually reach, and a footprint that fits your room. We read the Amazon US listing on the day we published, BowFlex's product, recall and protection-plan pages, and the CPSC recall notice. We link only to Amazon US with our buywellonce-20 tag.
Who these dumbbells are for
- People short on floor space: the listing says one pair replaces 15 separate weights. BowFlex lists each dumbbell at about 16.9 × 8.3 × 9 inches, and each sits in its own storage tray.
- Circuit and superset training: you twist a dial on each end to select a weight, then lift the handle straight out of the tray. The settings, per BowFlex, are 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 52.5 lb, so the small 2.5-lb steps up to 25 lb suit curls, raises and other isolation work.
- Light-to-moderate strength work: presses, rows, lunges and curls for most home lifters fit under 52.5 lb per hand. Home Gym Advice makes the same point in its comparison of the old and new 552.
- Original 552 owners: if you still have a recalled set, BowFlex's recall page says to stop using it and file a claim first. Depending on when you bought it, the remedy is a replacement, a full or prorated voucher, and a JRNY app membership.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who drops dumbbells: BowFlex's SelectTech owner's manual warns that dropping the dumbbell can damage the plates or the lock, can make plates fall off without warning, and voids the warranty. The same manual says not to lean on the handles or use them for push-ups. If your workouts end with weights hitting the floor, buy fixed rubber hex dumbbells instead.
- Lifters who need more than 52.5 lb per hand: there is no expansion kit. You would need the heavier Results Series 1090 (10 to 90 lb per dumbbell, per the comparison chart on the listing) or another system.
- Buyers who want a long warranty out of the box: the standard warranty is 2 years on parts, per BowFlex's spec page. Home Gym Advice calls that short for something you hope to keep for a decade.
- Very tight budgets: $328.98 was the Amazon US price on 2026-10-18. Amazon also lists a single Results Series 552 dumbbell; check that listing if one hand at a time suits your training.
What the Amazon listing says (verified 2026-10-18)
We checked ASIN B0FRNG2N5H on 2026-10-18:
- Title match: "BowFlex Results Series SelectTech Dumbbells", set name "BowFlex Results Series SelectTech Dumbbells (Pair)", brand Bowflex, color Black, model and part number BFW0025-OS, manufacturer Johnson Health Tech Inc, 2 items.
- Offer: In Stock at $328.98 against a shown list price of $399.99; ships from and sold by Amazon.com. A used offer from Amazon Resale was also listed. Confirm the live price and seller before you buy.
- Feature bullets: quick adjustment dials from 5 to 52.5 lb per dumbbell; replaces 15 separate weights; reinforced with durable metal plates and a locking system; ergonomic non-slip handle; storage trays included; a 2-month free trial of the JRNY app.
- Weight and materials: listed item weight 110.6 lb for the pair, with plastic and rubber named as materials; the maker's chart lists 55.6 lb per dumbbell including its base.
The recall, and what changed
This is the part most buyers search for, so here are the facts as published. The CPSC notice says Johnson Health Tech Trading recalled about 3,844,200 BowFlex 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells on June 5, 2025, because the plates could dislodge from the handle during use. Nautilus (BowFlex's former owner) had received 337 reports of plates dislodging, including 111 injuries such as concussions and broken toes. Johnson Health Tech Trading reported 12 incidents and no injuries for units it sold. Wirecutter withdrew its long-running 552 pick after the recall, and Consumer Reports changed its rating to Do Not Buy.
BowFlex's recall page names the Results Series 552 and 1090 as the replacement option. Johnson Health Tech told Consumer Reports that the selector disks on the new models are entirely metal; Consumer Reports said it had not tested that claim. The current listing describes reinforced metal plates and a locking system. Our read: the redesign is aimed squarely at the failure the recall named, but it has a shorter public track record than the original had, so follow the handling rules and register the serial numbers.
What ranking pages cover, and what we add
Home Gym Advice compares the old and new 552 and is frank about the 52.5-lb ceiling. Lift Evidence publishes a spec sheet for this exact model number. Wirecutter's page is now mainly a recall notice. Fewer pages give a dated Amazon US seller and price stamp, the exact 15 settings, CPSC numbers and the handling rules that void the warranty in one place, so that is what this page adds.
Warranty, support and the buy-once math
- Standard coverage: 2 years on parts, per BowFlex's product spec page and its protection-plan page for the 552.
- Optional plans: BowFlex's protection-plan page lists a 3-year Protection+ plan at $69.00 and a 5-year plan at $99.00, both with certified replacement parts and no deductibles. These are sold by BowFlex; check whether a plan can be added to an Amazon purchase before counting on it.
- Registration: the owner's manual asks you to keep proof of purchase and record both serial numbers, and to register at bowflex.com/register.
- Returns: BowFlex offers 30-day returns on direct purchases (minus shipping and handling). An Amazon order follows Amazon's return terms on the listing.
Labeled cost-per-use (assumptions, not predictions): at $328.98 on Amazon on 2026-10-18, assuming 3 sessions a week for the 2-year warranty window (312 sessions): $328.98 ÷ 312 ≈ $1.05 per session. At the same pace for 5 years (780 sessions): $328.98 ÷ 780 ≈ $0.42 per session. Five years is our assumption, not a tested lifespan. See how this compares with other gear in our cost-per-use buy-once gear roundup.
Pros and cons from the listing and maker materials
- Pro: 15 settings from 5 to 52.5 lb per hand in one compact pair, with fine 2.5-lb steps up to 25 lb.
- Pro: Redesigned with metal plates and a new locking system after the recall, per the listing and BowFlex.
- Pro: Sold and shipped by Amazon.com at our check; storage trays included; works with BowFlex's SelectTech stand (sold separately).
- Con: 52.5-lb ceiling with no expansion path.
- Con: Only 2 years of standard parts coverage; dropping voids it.
- Con: Long handles at about 16.9 inches can feel bulky for some movements.
